We Will Survive

We Will Survive

On Thursday afternoon Wigan Athletic Football Club, once again, opened its doors to the Independent fan websites for some frank and open discussions on all things Latics. Whether this is done elsewhere in the Premier League or outside it, for that matter, we’re not sure, but, either way, what it does show is how committed

A Fishy Deal

So, it’s February again, no doubt we all woke up this morning to choruses of “pinch, punch”, “white rabbits” and “bloody hell, Liverpool paid how much for Andy Carroll and we grabbed some bloody nobody from Scotland, bloody Martinez he knows nowt he does, my granny could do a better job and she speaks Spanish!”.

Go on, I’ll admit that I’ve been in a bit of a Latics based slump recently, then I’ll pause, let you gather your thoughts, build your pre-conceptions and then hit you with the truth.  I’ve not been down because of events in the pitch, uninspiring performances or because our manager doesn’t scream himself hoarse every game, what’s been getting to me is the constant bickering, over emotion and excessive demands.  I get enough of that at home from my two young kids without it affecting my escape route as well.

You’ve probably picked up that I’m in a lazy mood at the moment, something like normal service will be resumed shortly, but to keep me in your minds I thought that I’d share this what I wrote for the Mudhutter Winter Special available free from here.  If you haven’t got it then you’re missing out on 48 pages of top writing that you wouldn’t usually get on the web.  Try it now, or else you’re missing out.  Did I mention that it was free?

Not so great expectations

Not so great expectations

It’s been a long three weeks since I last wrote, I promise that I’ve not been hanging on until I can legitimately use a “preparing for the festive period”  excuse for my posting pattern, but sometimes things don’t change that much no matter how long you wait.  Three weeks ago it was 14 points from 14 games and third from bottom in the league, after Saturday it’s 16 from 17 and third from bottom.  Teams below us have got a little closer, but mid table is still much closer than ‘on the horizon’, basically it’s “as you were”.  Latics have problems to solve, but so do many other teams and it seems that it’s a case of the team that gets to its solution first will be the one that steadily pulls away from the muck.

There goes the fear (reprise) – Liverpool thoughts

Latics 1-1 Liverpool
Wednesday 10th November 2010

Which idiot wrote that match preview?  A resurgent Liverpool heading in the right direction, undoubtedly a better team than Latics who will be chasing a European place come May?   I thought I was kidding myself by weakly talking up Latics’ chances but who’d have thought it would turn out I was blowing smoke up the collective backside of the City of Liverpool, and without just cause to.

I’ll stick my neck out and say that I still think I’m right about the Scousers’ chances this season but I can’t believe just how… words fail me … rubbish they were last night, not because Latics outplayed them, but because, tactically, it was like watching a second division training session.  Half hearted attack, jog back to form two banks of four, half hearted attack, get ten men behind the ball (repeat to fade).

October catch up – Wolves, Newcastle, Bolton & Fulham Thoughts

October catch up – Wolves, Newcastle, Bolton & Fulham Thoughts

It wasn’t meant to work out this way, but an over-riding period of lethargy sandwiched between a bout of manflu and another of lurgy mean that it’s been almost a month since we talked football.  Yes, we’ve pretty much missed all of October, a month which (co-incidentally) I wrote about in the current issue of the Mudhutter fanzine.  To précis, I identified October as a key month in each of our Premier League seasons and concluded that the fixtures this time around meant that we might get (another) pretty good idea about how this one would pan out.
