Oof – that was a Late Tackle!

Here at This Northern Soul, we like a bit of old fashioned print media. That’s why we were so pleased to see the launch of LATE TACKLE, a new national football magazine written and produced by fans. Tired of the mainstream like 442 and coming at things from a slightly different angle from When Saturday Comes, Late Tackle is set to appeal to a wide spectrum of football fans who like to scratch beneath the surface.

From non league to World football dating back to the days when Robin Friday was playing right up until the present day, the magazine is a joy to read for people who just love football.

Whereas at Issue 1, it’s a bit early to dictate the house style of writing, Late Tackle fuses journalists writing from the perspective of fans, contributions from fanzine editors and ordinary fans with something to get off their chest.

Heroes are celebrated, as diverse as the aforementioned Robin Friday to the Brazil 1982 World Cup team and modern day villains such as Robbie Savage and Michael Owen are dissected and the mag looks at the lot of a non-league football manager. There are alternative views on the situation at Everton and Scottish football and a fascinating look at Peter Reid’s tenure at Sunderland from the angle of their fanzine editor.

Late Tackle merrily weaves the best of the internet into print form and for those of you who like to read the fine work of @Swiss Ramble blogger Kieron O’Connor, there’s an in depth look at FC Porto’s finances where the graphs are evocatively brought to life by the man himself.

There’s also a heart warming tale of one Millwall fan and his relationship with his dad and a Q&A with former Wigan Athletic star and all round rogue Mick Quinn. There’s Sunday League football, a moan about statistics, Serie A, Argentinian football and loads more.

And if that’s not enough for you, yours truly has contributed a four page article entitled ‘The Six Team Town’ which charts the history of football (and rugby) followers in Wigan and explains the battle that our football club faces in generating support in a town where so many take the easy option.

Late Tackle is a weighty mag on sale for just £3 with full colour inside and printed on the sort of paper all football magazines used to come out on. Copies of Issue 1 are still available and can be found on sale in WHSmiths and other major newsagents, or you can order online at the Late Tackle Website:

Having now digested Issue 1 in full, I can safely say that it is a welcome addition to independent football writing, borne out of the same spirit as the more weighty Blizzard for those of us who love to read all about the (still just) beautiful game…

Issue 2 will be out at the end of the month and if you haven’t got Issue 1 – be quick!
