O-MFG!

A potent reminder that things aren’t THAT bad…..
Welcome to Wigan Athletic, and welcome to your worst nightmares: a room full of the most terrible players to wear the hallowed blue and white.

We’re up to O in our alphabetically organised cornucopia of dross, and there’s a fair old contest going on. So let’s look at the nominees:

Luke goes first and throws in the awful Salomon Olembe. A raft of caps for Cameroon and he’d played for some big clubs and in big tournaments yet he looked hopelessly out of his depth for us.

Next up, Ian goes for Sanmi Odelusi, the man who once hit the corner flag when clean through on goal against Fleetwood. Sorry – MISSED the corner flag, he wasn’t even that close!

Jimmy opts for Neil Ogden, a local lad who didn’t look up to it at Latics but went on to score panfuls in the South Lancs League, mainly against Jimmy’s teams it transpired.

Alan, as ever, in controversial corner raises the name of current Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill. Not as his personal choice but one worth raising given he was barracked by a section of the crowd during his time at Latics.

There’s also room for Brendan Ormsby, the ex Aston Villa stopper brought in by ex team mate Kenny Swain and controversially (again) Brett Ormerod, more for not playing for us than what he actually did in his brief spell.

There’s a discussion about POGBA aka Liverpool teenage loanee Sheyi Ojo, albeit we conclude that he was just an enthusiastic young lad like a dog chasing a balloon.

Finally, as if we didn’t have enough bad keepers under N, we can throw Richard O’Donnell into the mix under O. Who could forget that hapless fumble in the cup at Bury?

To the polls and the first poll sees the aforementioned ex Walsall keeper in a dogfight with Olembe before O’Donnell lets it slip at the last minute. Nothing new there although it was perhaps closer than it should have been.

If the first heat was a close run thing then the second was a walkover with Odelusi romping home and only Ojo offering any resistance.

This kind of gave us an idea of what to expect in the final. We had high hopes for Olembe but it was again Sanmi Odelusi who won easily. Clearly his fleeting performances from two years ago were still fresh in people’s minds.
