A list of weally weally bad players…..

We’re back with another podcast and another round of Emporium of S***e, albeit it we covered the letter W a few podcasts back in our never ending quest to find Wigan Athletic’s worst ever player.  Alan kicks things off by putting forward useless on loan Bolton winger Stuart Whittaker, before Ian cranks things up by throwing Andy Webster into the mix.

A strange signing, it was almost as if we were the middle man to facilitate a move to Rangers in order to avoid Hearts selling him direct to them. He hardly played, injured or otherwise but on the rare occasion he did, he seldom impressed.

Jimmy quickly harks back to the early 90’s with geriatric centre forward Winston White, with some debate to follow on this supposed somersault he did after scoring a goal on his debut, like an ancestor to loveable Julius Aghahowa (see EOS A).

He looked so old that he’d put his back out doing aerodynamics by the time he reached us to be fair, but he had a long and illustrious career including a spell at Hong Kong Rangers.

Gareth Whalley is mooted as another who had little impact despite a Premier League pedigree. And speaking of which, Mark Ward had a fine top class career for West Ham and Everton amongst others but he only became notable for Latics due to him getting sent to the big house for a spot of cocaine dealing shortly after leaving the Latics.

There’s also the briefest of mentions, much like his career here for Tony Ward. And while we’re on the obscure route, Jon Whitney was another to throw into the mix.  What about Martyn Waghorn who would surely have been on @WeahsCousin’s list had he been on the podcast? Much like Tavernier, he never got a game and suddenly got a whole lot better the second he left. Playing mainly against bricklayers and fishmongers in the lower Scottish divisions.

We unanimously decide that Tommy Widdrington deserves to be thrown in the pot for having a ridiculous name.

Ex-Leicester midfielder Ian Wilson was one we definitely picked up when on his way out. Neil Whitworth is mooted amidst bizarre health issues, but there was no doubting his ability.   Of course Alan always likes a controversial pick and attempts to chuck Ray Woods in at the last minute due to being over-rated and Coventry paying over the odds for him. Still, he had magnificent hair though.

So to the polls….

In heat 1 it’s Andy Webster who secures victory over Danny Whitehead. Are we sure about these Whitehead votes? Has anyone actually seen him play? Would you recognise him if he walked past you in the street? Maybe you voted because he hasn’t played for us therefore he must be rubbish? Mind you, very few people have heard of Mark Ward or Jon Whitney I suppose.

And if obscurity is an escape route it didn’t appear to get hapless Bolton loanee Stuart Whittaker off the hook after he romped home ahead of Winston White, Gareth Whalley and the imperiously named Tommy Widdrington in Heat B.

The final, somewhat predictably saw the “star” from the Premier League years romp home with Andy Webster securing 45% of the votes cast although, once again, Danny Whitehead’s share of the vote looks a little harsh.
