Boots, Bakes and Backheels

The latest Pie At Night podcast invites former Latics player John Coyne to tell us about his time in the youth and reserves at a time shortly after Dave Whelan had taken over.

In what is a funny and revealing interview, John reveals his contract also involved him being a part time model for JJB Sports and how easy it was to clean Roberto Martinez’s boots.

He tells of his time as reserve team captain and forever being the 16th Man in the year when we lost to Man City in the playoffs. A year in which we typically didn’t even rotate the squad in the Auto Windscreen shield, and you know what, we actually won the thing. Not that that helped John in those days of three outfield subs.

John speaks highly of playing under John Deehan, getting the run around off Philippe Albert and ending up playing at Harrow Borough with a certain Pat Gavin.

We move on to chat to John about Everton’s recent history, rolling forward from Moyes through Martinez and now everyone’s favourite Dutch Uncle, Ronald Koeman.

We talk about which reality TV programmes we’d like to throw in the bin and which ones are our guilty pleasures. And we discuss where we went on our summer holidays, which wasn’t far in the absence of Dylan while John tells us how @WeahsCousin made it all the way to Tenerife.

We review the rather sparse letter E to find another footballer to lob into the emporium of sh*te, and as it’s a quick one we extend it to cover former Latics players with an Everton connection, allowing Ian to make a Gareth Farrelly related faux pas after which we discuss whether Mark Ward  was actually on drugs when he played for us or just selling them.

We finish with Preston things including some scathing words for Kevin Kilbane, a Jason Roberts backheel and reserve game shenanigans at Deepdale

Weighing in at just over an hour with music from the Dutch Uncles and LL Cool J, we are left pondering – whatever happened to the decent nicknames footballers used to have?
