A fine win in an entertaining game away at Peterborough last night saw Wigan extend their unbeaten run to seven games in a match which had fans on the edge of their seats until the very end.
Unsurprisingly Gary Caldwell opted to retain the side which destroyed Colchester on their last outing, the only changes being recalls to the bench for veterans Cowie and Davies Wigan started the game full of confidence playing with a swagger and belief but this was more than matched by the home side who had the first chance of the game when Bostwick headed wide from a corner, once again raising questions about Wigan’s ability to mark the opposition at set pieces.
Latics didn’t allow this to affect their play and the powerful running of star loanee Wildschut once again proved key when his direct run beat three men and as he reached the penalty area his powerful shot left Alnwick with no chance One soon became two when once again Wildschut attacked on the wing and fed the ball through to James whose shot was steered into the net wrong footing the keeper and Wigan fans began to believe that this football thingy was easy. Those thoughts were far too soon however as the home side responded with gusto with Taylor and Zakuani going close. Wildschut continued to terrorise the home defence and narrowly shot wide once again.
The game continued to flow from end to end with defences on both sides working overtime to stem the flow. Next up Jaaskelainen had to get down smartly to make a save and then Jacobs not to be outdone by Wildschut tested the keeper with a low powerful shot. Half time saw Wigan troop off, content with their first half work but under no illusion that the job was very much unfinished.
The second half started off very much as the first finished with both sides seeking to increase the goal tally. For Wigan, Wildschut and Jacobs seemed to be vying with each other to score where as for the Posh, Taylor, Washington and Forrester all had chances.
It was no surprise that the goal count was increased and this time it was Peterborough who got it when a shot from Taylor wasn’t held by Jaaskelainen and Oztumer fired the loose ball into the net.
Peterborough were very much in the ascendancy and Wigan had to work hard to stymie waves of Peterborough forays. The Peterborough pressure eventually told when a cross by Oztumer was bundled into the net by Coulibaly .
Anybody expecting Wigan to fold were very much mistaken as within a minute Wigan were ahead when Power received the ball unmarked on the edge of the area and his powerful shot beat Alnwick for what was to be the final goal in an entertaining game. Wigan were forced to hang on for six minutes of time added on but the full time whistle brought delight from the travelling band of Latics fans and a welcome three points which put Wigan onto the cusp of the play off places.
Wigan Line Up
Jaaskelainen; Barnett, Morgan, McCann; Daniels, Power, Perkins, James; Jacobs( Chow), Wildschut (Davies), Grigg(Holt).
