ACN update

This is the first time that I’ve had more than a passing interest in the African Cup of Nations. It’s surely a sign of our progress that one of our ‘stars’ is featuring in the tournament, a sign of our attitude that our manger isn’t taking the usual line of bemoaning his loss. Henri Camara is sure to feature heavily for Senegal, and his goals will no doubt be central to their progress (or lack of it). Despite all that I’m still struggling to get excited about it.

I did, however catch highlights of Senegal’s first game last night against a Zimbabwe team that are ranked as novices at this level. It was certainly refreshing. Where you come to expect dominance at international level to involve measured possession and slowly applied pressure, it was wave after wave of attack. Given Jewell’s comments at the weekend about Latics doing similar rather than killing games off it made me wonder. Is all this talk about us being a breath of fresh air in the Premier League just another way of highlighting our naivety?

Anyway Senegal had enough chances to win by a cricket score, something Zimbabwe are unlikely to do, even at cricket. Camara’s strike partner, Diouf, being at our most polite, could be best described as wasteful. In the end Henri made the difference, using his pace to get past defence and keeper to slot home in an empty net and later on making the second goal with a nice ball into Diouf’s replacement.

All’s well and good that our lad is in some sort of form, but you have to remember that the longer he shows it the longer he’s likely to be away. Good luck Henri, but not too much of it. See you soon and come back fit.
