Barnet v Cambridge United

The 5.30pm kick-off was ideal as the grandkids were on the way home to their respective abodes with “Our Lass” and instead of doing the outstanding diy around Aspull Towers & due to having BT Sport on tap I settled down to watch the Football Conference Premier Division game at “The Hive” home of Barnet.

Their opponents were Cambridge United top of the league and unbeaten for 16 matches until a 1-0 defeat away at Haig Avenue the other week.

After a cagey start to the game the away team playing in sky blue shirts, white shorts and purple socks took a two goal lead via Kwesi Appiah with a couple of cool finishes past the impressive Graham Stack and against the run of play to stun the home team.(Edgar Davids was culpable for the first by the way !)

The University outfit were then pegged back by a stunning reply by ex-third tier of the Spanish league Villa López

To complete the comeback Curtis Weston finished with aplomb on the stoke of half-time to keep it level at the break.

The second half was a lot more cagey affair, Barnet had a winner ruled out, no doubt the stupid flare impeded the linesman’s vision and at the other end Stack made a stunning save look easy to keep it to a point apiece.

The game was what football should be all about, quality passing, robust tackling, good goalkeeping, opponents respecting each other, a referee allowing the game to flow if possible and a passionate home and away support.

Players helped each other up after a calamities tackle and got on with it, free-kick or no free-kick.

It was a joy and a pleasure to view the game, well done to all concerned and besides me I’m sure the “live” 2,853 fan’s enjoyed it as well.
