FA see sense over Sammon sending off

Wigan Athletic have this evening confirmed that Conor Sammon’s red card, picked up at Old Trafford for not committing a foul on Michael Carrick has been rescinded.

The inept refereeing decision taken by Phil Dowd virtually ensured a Wigan Athletic defeat against Manchester United on Boxing Day, but at least now Conor does not have to sit out three vital matches, against Stoke City and Sunderland in the League and a FA Cup third round tie at Swindon Town.

Speaking of the FA’s decision a relieved Roberto Martinez said: “We thank the panel for their decision, which is the correct one. We now need to draw a line under the matter and move on. I am delighted to have Conor available for the next three matches.”

“It would have been really unfair for him to share the frustrating feeling that he had on Monday for another three games after doing nothing wrong.”
