Ferguson hails magnificent Wigan Athletic, but slams owd Dowd!

Beaten Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson conceded that his team was second best at the DW Stadium last night.

Speaking after seeing his expensively assembled team torn apart, he said,

“Wigan were the better team. They are a very under-rated team and we were completely dominated in the first half. We were second to every ball and only had one shot at goal.

“It was one of these off nights you get. We have been on a great run and it has put us in a position where we can win the league, so we have to get over the disappointment of tonight.”

Brave words, especially when you think that the English champions were an a quite memorable unbeaten run going into this encounter.  He still found time to complain about referee Phil Dowd’s performance though, despite him ruling out a perfectly good Victor Moses in the first half.

He bemoaned the fact that Dowd did not spot that the corner from which Maloney scored should really have been a United goal kick, and he is quite correct.

Still Ferguson may now find out whether or not the fabled referee apologies, a phenomenon that Roberto Martinez insists is true, actually do exist!
