Granqvist and Haestad speak

Both of Latics’ new signings have been in the news today.  Word from Sweden is positive, whilst the comments from the Fjords are likely to have rubbed a few people up the wrong way.  You’d think that in this day and age that footballers would be a little bit smarter about what they say to the media than to appear to be unhappy with their lot before they’ve even attended a training session.

Kristofer Haestad has been kind enough to let the world know that he chose his loan deal with Wigan over the chance of a permanent deal with Galatasary.  With the bright lights of the Premier League in his eyes the Norwegian took glory over cash and came to fulfil his dream of playing in England telling the world, “To get to play against the best in England is 100 times more important than earning millions.”

There’s talk of a deal already being done in the case that Haestad stays on after his loan deal, whether that includes his wages is unclear.  Assuming that the finer details need sorting it out and his six months at the club are successful, then it would be strange if he wasn’t rewarded with a decent deal.  It seems that is what he is expecting, “The financial conditions could probably be better but I will renegotiate the salary, should I decide to stay.”

Getting on better with the fans is Andreas Granqvist.  Halfway through his mid season break or not, the Swede is pushing Paul Jewell for a place in the team for Saturday’s cup game.  Speaking to the club’s website Granqvist said, “Now I just cannot wait to get playing and fighting for my place. Hopefully, I can feature at Portsmouth in the FA Cup this weekend if the international clearance is sorted but that is not my decision. But I feel ready physically”

Providing that the paper work is sorted in time, Saturday’s game seems a safe environment to test out the fitness of both new signings.  They may not get the whole game but hopefully Granqvist will get his wish and Haestad the chance to let his feet do the talking.  You never know they may even help Latics to what, at the moment, seems an unlikely cup win.
