Honours even in the Pier Derby

Southend and Wigan fought out an even draw , short on quality for the most part but high on effort and commitment in a game which was hampered by swirling high winds in Essex yesterday.

Wigan made five changes from the side which lost narrowly at home to Burton, Morgan and Wildschut due to injuries sustained in the week and three tactical with Perkins, Jacobs and Chow dropping to the bench to be replaced by Grigg, Junior, Barnett, Cowie and Pearce with the latter assuming the captain’s role.

The first half was a poor affair with chances for both sides at a premium with Southend’s best chance falling to Leonard whose shot bounced back off the cross bar with Jaaskelainen well beaten. Latics best chance fell to Barnett who fired a shot goalbound from a corner by Power only to see his shot cleared off the line by Atkinson.
Just prior to the half time whistle Wigan were forced to make a change with McCann limping off with a groin injury to be replaced by Perkins
Wigan upped the tempo in the second half and once again from a corner Barnett saw a goalbound shot blocked , this time from keeper Bailey who managed to tip the ball over the bar in a crowded six yard area.

Whyte and Payne then went close for the home side as the game ebbed and flowed. Next up it was Max Powers turn to test the home side but his powerful shot from the edge of the area was blocked by Barrett for Southend and then the keeper made a fine save from James on his unfavoured right foot.

Wigan made two substitutions in the space of ten minutes bringing on Jacobs and Davies for Grigg and Junior respectively and these served to spark Wigan into a dominant attacking spell of football. Wigan had a good shout for a penalty for a foul on Pearce refused and Perkins and Davies both went close before that man Barnett again was thwarted in the last minute of the game with an attempt which bounced back off the bar.

The full time whistle blew shortly afterwards with a result which was a fair reflection on both sides efforts.

Wigan Line Up

Jaaskelainen, Daniels, Barnett, Pearce (c), James, McCann ( sub Perkins 42 ), Junior ( sub Davies 75), Cowie, Power, Grigg ( sub Jacobs 67), Revell.
