Huthing and puffing

We’re certainly taking a step up in the transfer market this season market. Last year it was a mixture of unknowns, lower division players and pie in the sky attempts. We now seem to be pitching at players that you’ve heard of and that will probably improve the team. The latest example of that is the reported £5 million bid we have had accepted for Chelsea’s Robert Huth. Unfortunately it seems like our non-league heritage and 2 associate member’s cups aren’t quite enough to capture the German’s attention as he has his sights set on the bright lights of the Bundesliga.

Personally I think a “like to keep my options open” comment, maybe a brew with Maurice and Brenda, would have done him no harm. Maybe even done his profile some good. Now this is a player who spent a great deal of the season moaning that lack of opportunity at first team level might affect his World Cup chances, he can’t be far off having more international caps than starts at club level. The last thing he wants is a reputation for arrogance.

There’s no doubting that Huth is a player with potential as TV pundits and Champ Manager ‘experts’ alike will testify, and yet despite repeated rumours of interest from clubs it seems that none of them got anywhere near signing him for whatever reason. If he has a decent World Cup then he’ll no doubt be in demand by all and sundry, if he doesn’t then that might not be the case and he could quite easily be regretting his dismissal of our advances.

Either way we can only hope that Huth’s attitude isn’t something we come up against too much this summer, otherwise next season could be longer and harder than any of us expects.
