Latics 4-2 Persepolis

Has anyone got a clue how good the Iranian league is? The national team may have played at the World Cup but I’m guessing that doesn’t translate to a high standard of football back home. Still, the first action of the season is still the first action of the season and it’s more about finding your feet as much as anything. Persepolis may not have provided the sternest challenge, but they got the full weight of our summer signings.

Kirkland, Hall, Landzaat and Heskey all started this one. By all accounts the Heskey/Camara partnership got off to a good start, the two strikers grabbing all 3 of Latics’ first half goals, reports suggesting that the understanding that we want to see may be there already. It was a friendly so you know how the second half goes. Substitutions, loss of momentum and, never mind, we learnt a lot in the first half.

The Iranian team got back into it with 2 goals, but Johansson maintained the respectability of the score line with a fourth for Latics late on.
