Lies, Damned Lies and Latistics?

Author: No Comments Share:

Anyone reading some of the irrational comments on some Latic message boards you would think we’d already been relegated but there is a different way of looking at matters in a more logical manner.

At present it is wrong to look at the results for the early part of last season and compare them with this season as we didn’t play the same teams.  Also looking at how many points other teams have acquired after six games is no real guide to our current form. However, if we look at what happened in the corresponding fixtures then this is a more accurate assessment because, although some will have changed in each team, quite a lot of the players are the same ones as last season.

The table below shows Roberto Martinez in an entirely different light to Steve Bruce because this season we won at Aston Villa and West Ham gaining six points whereas last season only one point was gained by the draw at Aston Villa.

The only other major difference in this set of results is the 5-0 hammering by Manchester United, even this reverted back to type because under Jewell we regularly got beat 4-0 by United. The Everton and Arsenal away results remain unchanged because the goal difference is still -5 for these two fixtures.

At the moment I am not arguing that the team is playing well but at least by comparing like with like it is a more valid method than one based on an individual’s subjective opinion.  Then again why let the facts get in the way of an irrational argument?
