Maynard clips Owl’s wings

A brace from on loan Nicky Maynard and a late late strike from Marc-Antoine Fortune saw Wigan burst back into form in fine style from Saturday’s disappointing defeat at Huddersfield and in doing so inflicting the first defeat in 2014 on a resurgent Sheffield Wednesday side.

Tuesday’s game was a re-arranged match following an abandoned game when Wigan were in front and coasting to victory in December but if this abandonment had affected Wigan they didn’t show it as Uwe Rosler’s side showing three changes with McClean, Maynard and McCann coming in for Crainey, Gomez and Fortune

Wigan’s momentum was slowed briefly when a bad injury to Semedo saw the centre half stretchered off  but with Maynard looking sharper up front than in previous matches and Waghorn once again looking lively on the wing , Wigan continued to press forwards and were rewarded when the two loanees combined well and Maynard’s low shot beat former Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland. From that moment on Wigan were in total control, playing with a confidence and composure lacking in the previous game.

One nil quickly became two nil as a powerful in swinging corner from Waghorn found its way into the net with Maynard claiming the final touch

So much control Latics had over Wednesday that the only blemish for Latics before the break was two shots that Al Habsi saved with ease .

Wednesday increased their tempo after the break but Wigan’s defence held firm under an aerial assault and Wigan were forced into long range shots in an attempt to increase their lead.

This they did in the dying second of the game when Maynard set off on a jinking run and his shot was saved by Kirkland but the keeper failed to hold the ball leaving Fortune with an easy chance which he duly converted giving Wigan the three points and moving them into the top ten of the division.

Team Line Up :

Al Habsi, Perch, Boyce, Barnett, Beausejour, McArthur (Kiernan), Watson, McCann Waghorn,( Crainey ), Maynard, McClean (Fortune).

Man of the Match  : Nicky Maynard…..a fine striker’s performance.
