Stalemate at the Riverside

Middlesboro and Wigan played out a goalless draw in blustery conditions in the North East yesterday.

Wigan manager Uwe Rosler continued his policy of rotating his squad with four changes from the side which triumphed over Crystal Palace in the F.A.Cup with recalls for Powell, Crainey, McCann and Fortune at the expense of McManaman, McClean, McArthur and Maynard

A cold and windy evening played a major part in the proceedings at the Riverside Stadium which ended goalless between Wigan Athletic and Middlesborough. Chances on goal were few and far between as both combative midfields cancelled each other out in a tepid affair watched by an poor crowd of just over thirteen thousand hardy spectators

Fortune worked hard for Wigan up front but starved of any quality ball he had little chance to make an impression, whilst the Wigan defensive line with Barnett once again to the fore dealt comfortably with the majority of what  Boro’ threw at them. Mustapha Carayol came closest to scoring for Boro’ with a header which was blocked by Perch and for Wigan the best chances fell to Crainey, whose shot was well saved by Given and McCann who wasted a good chance.

Quality moments were rare on a night dominated by the elements and a point was a fair result for both sides with Wigan failing to turn possession into chances and manager Uwe Rosler will no doubt spend a few sleepless nights due to a worrying injury to Wigan’s main goal threat, Nick Powell.
