The Drugs Don’t Work

Adrian Mutu tested positive for cocaine at Chelsea in 2004
The West London club terminated his contract

Mark Bosnich failed a drugs test for Chelsea in 2002 and later admitted cocaine use
Chelsea ripped up his contract and got shut of him

Matt Stevens, an international rugby union player failed a drugs test while playing for Bath in 2009
He was subsequently sacked by his club

Former Brentford and Leyton Orient star Roger Stanislaus also tested positive for cocaine
He received a one year ban from the game and had his contract terminated with immediate effect.

Even Diego Maradona, for years idolised by thousands of Neapolitans was dumped when he finally tested positive for cocaine

Thankfully no Wigan Athletic player has ever tested positive for taking cocaine or any other illegal drugs, performance enhancing or otherwise.  I am sure that if this did happen, Wigan Athletic would follow the lead of those other football clubs above and dismiss such a player immediately and rip up their contract.

I can’t imagine what the furore would be if a professional sports person tested positive for cocaine, and was NOT sacked by that club, maybe even welcomed back by that same club several months before their ban is even completed and invited in for training so as to ensure he is fully fit and ready to play again for the club who didn’t sack him?

I mean that wouldn’t happen in football so there’s no way it would happen in a self-styled “Family game” would it?

That wouldn’t happen in a sport which is continually smothering the local and regional press championing it’s stars as local heroes and role models for youngsters would it?

Just say no kids
