The waiting game

Good things certainly come to those who wait don’t they? And for those travelling faithful up at the Stadium of Light it was one of those manic, jump up, fall over and on your knees raising your hands to the heavens type celebrations. Come on, if it happened every week, it would get boring wouldn’t it?

We don’t seem to be capable of winning a game easily – losing a game easily we’ve mastered in recent weeks but for all the lows we’ve experienced in the last couple of years under Roberto Martinez, the highs have been as good as anything I’ve known whilst following the Latics.

The reaction of the players and the management at the end when the winner went in was as priceless as the look of absolute dejection on the face of Steve Bruce as the baying locals called for his head. You see it was a confidence thing after all – and whereas we’re still firmly in the mire, that victory and the manner of it will hopefully stand the team in good stead for the tougher tests to follow.

Watching the game with a Geordie on Saturday, his independent and unbiased opinion after seeing us play twice recently is that we have a superb passing game and should be nowhere near the bottom three. We still are though and for all the midfield play there is still a bit of work which needs to be done both at the back and up front if we’re going to pick up points in either simple or dramatic fashion.

We’ve had the early shock to the system of losing eight on the bounce and with the run of games to come it is still a tall order to pull ourselves out of it. However, with the club offering tickets for the big three home games of Arsenal, Chelsea & Liverpool for under £60 and tickets for West Brom away being a veritable snip at £15 a pop, maybe it’s time we all started trying to enjoy our team for what it is and what other fans can see rather than trying to pick holes in everything we do.

Our support can make a difference and we ARE getting better: I mean we went a whole eight minutes before conceding on Saturday! Sorry. Keep the faith!!
