Watford vs Wigan Athletic – Match Preview

Author: No Comments Share:

A cracking result for Wigan, to beat Rotherham at the New York Stadium on Saturday, meant that the gap to the team in 21st place (Fulham & Rotherham) was cut to just 6 points. Momentum has an opportunity to jump on the Coach with the Wigan players for the drive down the M6 & M1 to North London for the game against Watford.

So Wigan play Watford for a 2nd time in the league this season at Vicarage Road, as you’re aware Wigan are going for 5th Away win on the spin, with a hope to cutting the gap to Fulham or Rotherham to a mere 3 points. Fulham have a game at Home against Leeds on Wednesday evening, Rotherham away to Forest on the same evening.

It’s the 38th game in the Sky Bet Championship. Wigan Athletic will be playing Watford at Vicarage Road, match will be played on Tuesday the 17th of March, with a 7:45pm Kick off.

League Position, Wigan is still in 22nd place with 34 points, Watford is in 2nd place with 69 points. Top of the table are Bournemouth, they are top also with 69 points, but are top by goal difference from both Derby & Middlesbrough both with +8 goals (Derby in 2nd due to goals scored).

Looking at recent form coming into this game, Wigan is in 14th place in the last 6 form table, with 3 wins & 9 points. Watford is in 3rd place with 4 wins & a draw from their last 6. Top of the form table is still Norwich also with 4 wins & a draw, but top due to a better goal difference over those 6 games.

  • Wigan P 6 W 3 D 0 L 3 (Wins against Blackpool, Norwich & Rotherham)
  • Watford P 6 W 4 D 1 L 1 (Wins against Rotherham, Leeds, Fulham & Reading)

Previous Games between the 2, we covered these for the 1st game at Vicarage Road in December, Watford won that game 2-1; Deeney getting the winner in the 82nd minute, Wigan’s goal scored by McCann. Overall it now means that there have been 15 games, with a very equal Wigan winning 5, Watford winning 5 & 5 draws. Thanks to Cockney Latic for the head to head info.

Referee from the Game will be David Coote; assistants will be Graeme Fyvie & Simon Mather, with the 4th official being Mark Brown.

David looked after games for both team at the end of last season, for Wigan it was their 3-1 away victory against Ipswich in March, which saw 4 yellow’s issued by David, with Ramis & McClean picking up cards for Wigan, McClean himself getting a brace with Barnett getting the other.

For Watford it was a heavy 4-1 home defeat to Huddersfield, with David issuing 5 Yellow cards, with Angella, Hoban & Tozser seeing yellow, Troy Deeney getting Watford’s only goal that Saturday.

Overall this season, David has looked after; 20 games issuing 80 Yellows & 3 Reds.

Team News, Wigan have signed Liverpool’s Jerome Sinclair on loan to the end of the season, so will be available for the match on Tuesday. Other team news saw Ojo subbed early in the 2nd half, other than whether this was precautionary or tactical, Malky should have a full squad available to him. Though I know McClean picked up his 10th yellow of the season, so answers on a post card if he misses a couple of matches for this?

Watford will be looking to see the extent of Almen Abdi’s Hamstring injury after being subbed early for the 2nd match on the spin?

How the Bookies see the game, well they obviously haven’t seen Wigan’s away form, as they have a Home win for Watford at 50%, an Away win for Wigan at 26% & a draw at 24%.

As for William Hill, they have the game at 19/10 for Wigan, 9/4 for the Draw & 29/20 for Watford. As for the foolish bet, I’m going to go for Pennant to score first & Wigan to win 2-1 @ 100/1. Also a crafty little double of Forest & Leeds for Wednesday night will get you 9/2.

My thoughts on the game just make sure Momentum gets on the coach on the drive down to Watford, let’s just scare a few teams who thought the 3 Championship teams to go down were nailed on!  Oh and here’s something to explain the confusing nature of my Match Preview, you should work out why……
