Wigan Athletic vs Charlton Athletic – Match Preview

Author: No Comments Share:

So we finally won a game, only the 5th in 31 games, the first win since Boxing Day & only the 3rd league victory in an astonishing 26 games. As you could imagine the Blue Bunting was brought out in the TNS office, Wolf travelling down especially from the Burnley TNS Office, to enjoy the Jelly & Ice Cream that Peter had brought in.

It’s the 32nd game in the Sky Bet Championship. Wigan Athletic will be playing Charlton Athletic at the DW Stadium, the kick off will be on a Friday night, with of course a 7:45pm kick off.

Though we won, have I mentioned that, Wigan remain in 23rd place, with 25 points, but the teams above us are getting closer, Charlton are in 18th Place with 36 points. Middlesbrough is top of the Championship on 60 points.

Looking at recent form coming into this game, ironically enough both teams won last time out ending winless droughts. So Wigan are in 21st in the Form table, with 1 win & 2 draws in the last 6, Charlton also have the same 1 win & 2 draws, standing in 20th. Top of the form table is Boro with 5 wins and a draw from their last 6 games:

  • Wigan P 6 W 1 D 2 L 3 (Win against Reading with Draws against Blackburn & Ipswich)
  • Charlton P 6 W 1 D 2 L 3 (Win against Brentford with Draws against Wolves & Rotherham)

As I was away on vacation in August for the game at The Valley, we didn’t do a Match Preview, so previous games weren’t covered! So looking at them, there have been 7 League game in total.

Of course the last game was in August, it saw a 2-1 Home win, with Callum getting Wigan’s only goal. The remaining games; saw 2 last season, Fortune & Gomez getting the goals at the DW for a 2-1 win & the other game was 0-0. The other 4 were back to back 05/06 & 06/07 seasons, in Wigan’s first Premier League seasons. These 4 games saw the Home team win each time, Wigan beating Charlton 3-2 in November 2006 (McCulloch, Camara & Jackson) & then a 3-0 win in December 2005.

Who got a Hat-Trick for Wigan on that day in December?  Answers on a Post Card…..

Thanks as ever to Cockney Latic for the Head to Head info.

Referee from the Game will be Chris Kavanagh; his Assistants will be Richard Wild & Robert Jones. The 4th official will be Scott Duncan.

We last saw Chris, when Wigan played Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in late November last year. He dished out 5 Yellow Cards, all to Defenders, with Ramis & Barnett picking up Cards for Wigan.

Charlton last saw Chris only a few weeks ago in a 3-0 defeat to Ipswich in late December, he dished out 3 Yellow Cards that game, with Tucudean picking up the card for Charlton.

Team News for Wigan, Malky will now be without Chris Herd, who left the game against Reading on a stretcher and has since returned back to Villa for surgery on a medial ligament injury.  All at TNS wish Chris good luck in a speedy recovery.

How the Bookies see the game, well amazingly and the first time in I don’t know how long, 43% of the Bookies believe it’ll be a Home win, 29% are going for an Away win and the remaining 28% say it’ll be a draw.

Other interesting bets, to look at via William Hill include, 10/11 for Wigan, 3/1 Charlton and 5/2 for the Draw. Wigan are 5/1 for a 1-0 win, were Charlton are 9/1 and my daft bet, if you want a Reading repeat you can get 75/1 for Jason to score first and Wigan to win 1-0.

My thoughts on the game, well I was a little mad for the last Match Preview & I know I offended a few. Also there are vicious rumours my Preview got printed out and stuck to the Dressing Room Door at the Madejski, but they are rumours.

If we can go back to back and move up to 28 points, I do think Wigan will make teams like Brighton; Rotherham & Fulham start to take notice. The game against Reading was best described as the players showing a great deal of commitment, I’d be happy for that again against Charlton & 3 more points.

COME ON WIGAN.
