Wigan bow out of Capital Cup with a whimper.

A much changed Wigan Athletic side fell at the first hurdle last night as Manchester  City gained some revenge for the shock of being beaten in the F.A.Cup final last May.

Wigan manager Owen Coyle opted to rest players following Sunday’s league game with Ipswich by making nine changes  and handing  a first season start to Fyvie and debuts to Garcia and Nicholls

Wigan were competitive in the game with City, until the first half kicked off that is. The stats of twenty four shots on goal from City versus three from Wigan and sixty three percent possession for City versus  thirty seven percent for Wigan tells its own story as Wigan were totally out thought and out classed.

The only surprise in the first half was that it took City 33 minutes to open the scoring and the goalless scoreline up until this point was down to some fine saves . The deadlock was broken however when Dzeko  had an easy tap in after Ferdaninho split the Wigan defence.

Wigan’s only attacking moment of note was a free kick from Gomez

Wigan almost scored in second half but thankfully for Crainey his potential own goal didn’t bear fruition, City made it two nil when Jovatic, despite his shot being partially saved by Nicolls the ball ended up in the net.

Wigan offered very little in response and it was no surprise when City increased their lead. A foul by Fyvie ,allowed Toure to take a free kick and the ball flew into the net with Nicholls helpless .

City continued to press and made their dominance tell with two goals in the last ten minutes. First a mistimed clearance from Shotton saw the ball fall to Jovetic who had an easy tap in and then Negredo put Navas through and his powerful shot brought to an end the scoring with a five nil thumping which didn’t flatter the hosts.

Mr Friend’s blew the final whistle to bring Latics Capitol One sojourn to an end and in all reality for a Championship team also with ambitions in Europe it was probably one competition too far.
