“No previous occasion demanded so much from Ireland’s Soccer representatives as the visit of Germany on Saturday. Only on Wednesday last the Germans though beaten by Scotland had impressed the experts by what was described as a dazzling display of football and their visit to England last season won similar praise.
Obviously then a victory for Ireland meant placing her on the same level as Scotland and England.”
This was the second game in a row that Ireland had scored 5,having beaten Luxembourg on 9th May 1936.
At a game which had 28,000 spectators providing gate receipts of 1,785 pounds Ireland with Paddy Moore having a great game sharing in four goals (Moore was to score two goals the following day as Rovers beat Cork 6-1 in Milltown)
“The victory was gained through the adoption of the right tactics to counteract the style of game which experience had taught the Irish players to expect from her continental rivals”
With the Irish side not allowing the Germans settle into her game of quick and deliberate passing, the defenders tackled quickly and with determination.
Germany were the first to show with Hohmann missing a possible chance before a low header by Siffling was saved by Foley in the Irish goal.
Ireland took the lead after 25 minutes when Geoghegan sent in a cross which appeared to have been lost by Donnelly but regaining possession he scored with what is described as a a low “screw” shot.
Geramny equalised within a minute when Kobierski equalised witha low drive. In the 32nd minute Germany took the lead Szepan who drove home after a cross by Kobierski was cleared out by a defender.
A penalty by Davis was converted in the 40th minute when the same players was taken down in the box by Goldbrunner the German centre half.
There were huge cries for another penalty a minute later as Geoghegan was bowled over in the box by a rather vigorous charge in the back.

Ireland’s goal was lucky in the first five minutes of the second half but having weathered the storm Moore crossed accurately where Geoghegan flung himself forward to head into the net after 58 minutes.
Donnelly got his second goal after 69 minutes when Ellis cleverly headed to him after a cross by Moore.
Moore had a shot from 25 yards after 75 minutes and with the German keeper Jakob fumbling the shot Davis was on hand to get the fifth goal.
Turner Ireland’s Captain had this to say after the game “
It was a awonderful game and I was really proud to captain such a team.
I think it was team work that won. We played to a plan, by which I became a third back, with the intention of shutting out the German inside forwards and it proved successful.
It was a hard game, but a clean one.
The close passing of the visitors’ forwards was wonderful”
