In a bid to eclipse the showmanship of bidding £10 million pounds for Scott Parker it now seems that Dave Whelan has set his sight on one time golden boy and England vice captain, Michael Owen. Now someone, somewhere must be having a laugh. Apparently (at this stage I’ve not seen it for myself) Sky are reporting an £11.7 million pound bid and hastily booked easy jet flights to Spain.
Now unless Big Dave just fancied a couple of nights in Madrid this seems a little too real to be true.
Yes the lad is looking for first team football, yes he wants a move to the North West, yes the rumours state we’ll match his wages and offer him a get out clause in January if he doesn’t fancy it any more, erm I mean a big club come in for him. But do/can you believe that any of it is real.
I’ve been telling people since the Ellington situation first came up that if he went it would be a week before we were linked with Owen, and here we are. Is it a case of time will tell if it’s true, or can we just sit back comfortable in the thoughts that whilst the world is distracted by this PJ is busy sorting out some one who will sign for us.
On that front he’s come out today saying that Brian Robson did a U-turn on letting Earnshaw join us and that we’ve not made a bid for Ashton because Norwich have said he’s not for sale. Is it just me or is he wrong to leave things like that. It’s a whole lot harder to say no when there’s a big pile of cash in front of you. Shouldn’t we be testing their resolve on these two. If the reports are anything to go by we’re ready to pay 7 mil for Ashton, get that faxed over to the chairman officially and then see how much he doesn’t want to sell him, at the same time get 2.5 over to WBA and let’s see if we can make some profit on the Duke deal.
