Early Match Preview for Wigan vs Reading

Author: No Comments Share:

So we are just a few days away from the start of the 2014/15 season.

The TNS office is quiet for a mid Week, with just Peter in the office with myself as I type this article up.  He’s been tutting a lot this afternoon as he works on his Google Calendar to balance the coming season, with his love of Thrash Metal.

First game up is versus Reading this Saturday.

I’d have a go at trying to do a full Match preview but as it’s the first game of the season, trying to understand who’ll be playing and will Grant Holt get a number is anyone’s guess?

Match will be Game 1 of 46 in the Sky Bet Championship, on Saturday the 9th August, with a Kick off at 3:00pm.  Match of course will be played at our very own DW Stadium.  If you want to find where the DW Stadium is, click this link.

Looking at the bookies as I write/type Wigan are 3/1 to gain promotion (Multiple Bookies), though you can get 10/3 at Bet Victor.  To win the Championship, yep the Top spot, last seen in Division 3, you can get 9/1 with the majority of bookies and again better odds of 10/1 with that Victor bloke.  More realistic odds are a Top 6 placing, with odds at Evens though some are running 11/10, for Wigan to at least make the Playoffs.

For one of those daft bets, you wish you never made but they sounded good at the time!  You can currently get 5/2 for Grant Holt to be our top goal scorer come May and Waghorn, Fortune & Riera are at 7/2 aswell.

If you remember Wigan played Reading at the DW early this year in April, with a straight forward 3-0 victory for Wigan as they confirmed there Play off place, damn that Charlie Austin.

Since that last match Wigan’s transfers have seen Aaron Taylor-Sinclair, Andrew Taylor, Martyn Waghorn, Oriol Riera, James Tavernier, Don Cowie & Emyr Huws join.  With Jordi Gómez & Danny Redmond leaving.  Yep that goal against Everton in the FA Cup Quarter final was rather special Jordi.

As for Injuries, I’ve looked on the Wigan Athletic Web Site to see if they have the latest Injury news but as it looks like the Physio last updated from Richard Collinge was the 9th July, I can only guess but here’s the update Richard gave courtesy of Wigan Athletics’ official page:

“That Shaun Maloney & James McArthur are on schedule to be fit for the start of the season, with long-term absentees Chris McCann & Ben Watson due to be ready soon afterwards.
So to Reading if you didn’t already know, they have a very good independent site called “Royals Rendezvous“.  It’s a cracking independant site & we’ve done work with them for a number of seasons.  Like our own, it’s good in the fact as you enter the site you’re not bombarded by pop up adverts for Airlines, TV Channels & Cameron Diaz latest movie.
Created in the New Year of 2011, it’s an off shoot from the BBC 606 Page that is no longer with us.  Have a look; it’s a really good site.  They too have a Match preview on their Forum page, so not to repeat some of the good work on here.  I too didn’t realise there manager Nigel Adkins played in goal for us…..
As to repeat what RR has said, there have been 40 previous meetings between the 2 teams, of which we have a rather interesting fact that they have been played in all 4 tiers of the English Football League.  Reading have won 14, Wigan 17 & 9 draws.  Also did you know we’ve never met Reading in a Cup Competition, thanks to Cockney Latic for that one.
So to a new season, here’s to a successful one for Uwe and his team.

* Just to disclaim This Northern Soul will continue to use the ‘#believe’ hashtag as started by Sawdoctor for the Stoke game.  We are not jumping on any bandwagon where we currently see Wigan Council renaming a square to ‘Believe Square”!  Though we do have a sneaky feeling it’s be heavily influenced by the colour Beige with the Council organising it.
