It is housed in the Urbis building at Cathedral Gardens close to the station and even better close to the pubs that are in the shadow of the Cathedral.

It will once again be free to wander around the exhibits of the world’s greatest game and if the Preston set-up was anything to go by football fans of all ages will no doubt enjoy it immensely.

I would assume it will take a few visits to get round everything properly, especially if like me you tend to get absorbed in the mists of time photos & texts.

Plus the superb Roy Clarkes Homes of Football exhibition is also on display, worth going for that alone.

Also a kiddies area is on the agenda with interactive stuff but as ever I will be drawn to the old timers’ pictures and the game well before anyone thought about putting a wok on the wall of your house.

Their slogan “Drama, history, skill, art, style, faith, passion….football” just about somes us up here at thisnorthernsoul as well !

The official stuff ….

Every display cabinet, every interactive screen, each audio-visual unit in the place, similarly resonates.

From the first football programmes to the seats from the old Wembley, from L S Lowry’s painting Going to the Match (on loan from the Professional Footballers’ Association) to a First World War recruitment poster (“Play the greater game, join the Football Battalion”), it is not just sporting history being mapped out here.

It is our collective cultural memory.
