One of the threads here at thisnorthernsoul was a debate about Football or Music,  http://www.thisnorthernsoul.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=8998.0  so this reminded me of a time from an era of my youth, this year is 40 Years since the Bickershaw Pop Festival in 1972

Now even though it was “my era” I wasn’t much into music unless it was the Match of the Day, Sportsnight or The Big Match theme tunes but a small village between Leigh & Wigan really rocked and came to the national & worlds media attention.

The Bickershaw Pop Festival had kids bunking off school and sales of wellies rocketed as mega groups of the time hit the stage.

Harry Cohen (“TheCount”) chose Naylors Farm fields for The Grateful Dead, The Kinks, Donavan, Captain Beefheart, Incredible String Band, Hawkwind, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Country Joe McDonald, Linda Lewis, Electric Flamin Groovies, Pacific gas & Electric, Wishbone Ash, Victor Brox, Dr John, Maynard Ferguson & even The Haydock Brass Band. (Apologies if I have missed anyone out)

Jeremy Beadle got enthusiastically involved & helped attract one of the most ambitious rock festival line ups the country had seen.

This was truly a belt and braces event but went down as one of the best open air gigs Europe had ever seen now or before.
