Has Premier League Safety moved to 42 points?

Author: No Comments Share:

Is 42 the new 40? & will it be the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything?

Listening to 5Live tonight prior to the Blackpool Chelsea game.

There is a new belief that with the Premier League being so open @ the Top & the bottom of the league, 40 points may not be enough?

The points tally banded around this evening is looking at around 41 or even 42 points for safety. The ‘Fink Tank’ go along with this theory with 41 points as being enough for safety. But they also have Wigan going down, so what do they know…..

Fink Tank

So with Chelsea beating Blackpool this evening 3-1, bar Everton & Birmingham who play this week, all the teams who could mathematically go down have now each played 29 games.

So who can go down? A theory that only teams beginning with ‘W’ will be relegated this season, has been banded around, choosing 3 from 4 with Wigan, Wolves, West Brom & West Ham. But in recent weeks all 4 teams have been showing signs of improvement, with West Ham picking up 11 points from their last 6 games.

Another theory that may start here @ Yotac, is that more teams beginning with ‘B’ may find themselves relegated this season, with Birmingham, Blackburn and Blackpool all suffering from a dip in form in the League @ the wrong time:

Birmingham 2 wins, 1 draw & 7pts in the last 6.
Blackpool 1 win, 1 draw & 4pts in the last 6 &
Blackburn also 1 win, 1 draw & 4pts in the last 6.

All the other teams form in the last 6 games:

Bolton 3 win & 1 draw – 10pts
Sunderland 1 win & 1 draw – 4 pts
Newcastle 1 win & 3 draws – 6pts
Everton 3 wins & 1 draw – 10pts
Fulham 2 wins & 3 draws – 9pts
Stoke 1 win & 1 draw – 4 pts
Aston Villa 2 wins & 2 draws – 8pts
West Brom 1 win & 4 draws – 7pts
West Ham 3 wins & 2 draws – 11pts
Wolves 2 wins & 2 draws 8pts
Wigan 1 win 2 draws – 5pts

& the league as it stands tonight:

7 Bolton 29 2 40
8 Sunderland 29 -2 38
9 Newcastle 29 3 36
10 Everton 28 0 36
11 Fulham 29 1 35
12 Stoke 29 -6 34
13 Aston Villa 29 -13 33
14 Blackburn 29 -12 32
15 Blackpool 29 -15 32
16 West Brom 29 -15 32
17 West Ham 29 -13 31
—————————
18 Birmingham 27 -12 30
19 Wolves 29 -15 29
20 Wigan 29 -23 27

Table text from the BBC.

So let’s see? Everton play Birmingham Wednesday night, and if Birmingham get a decent result from Goodison? Already we’ll see some truth in this new theory with 9 games to go, 33 points will be needed just to get out of the relegation zone.

& to think in May of 2010, 31 points would have seen you safe after 38 games. Just goes to show 40 points may no longer be the Answer to the Ultimate Question!
