Latics make first signing of January window

With the combination of bad form and bad temper that has beset the Anfield goalkeeping fraternity over recent weeks you must have started to wonder what would happen with Chris Kirkland. Here is a keeper on top of his game, officially a Liverpool player and only a recall clause away from being whisked off back to Melwood.

Whether there was a real chance of that happening or whether he has proved what he needed to, is anyone’s guess but Latics have today moved to ward off any speculation by signing the England number two keeper on a permanent deal.

The length of the contract is two and a half years and the fee is officially undisclosed although £3.5 million has been mentioned. Now that still seems like a lot of money for a keeper, but when you consider that it looks like he’s a full time member of McClaren’s England squad and that we got nearly that much for Roy Carroll, it’s not that bad.

The move is one that will silence the cynics and lays to rest any argument about whether Latics have an England international in the squad. With the next fixture being a friendly, hopefully it won’t be that long before he gets another cap, and you never know he may be joined by a team mate or two.
