Left Foot: The Smiths – Cemetery Gates

So, Bury has been a bit of a graveyard for Latics fortunes this season, right?  Yes, but that’s not why We’re starting with this song, it’s simply a tribute to Gigg Lane’s Cemetery End, which fascinated me as a youngster.  Just about the only thing I’m jealous of Bury fans for is the ability to annoy my mates every other Saturday morning by texting them to say “A dreaded sunny day.  So let’s go where we’re happy and I’ll meet you at the cemetery gates”

Right foot: Last Shadow Puppets – Bad Habits

Speaking of graveyards, Bury’s Wikipedia page doesn’t paint a good picture of its music scene.  Elbow frontman Guy Garvey is just about it, as well as someone who played drums for King Crimson in 1971.  Oh and Suzanne Shaw of Popstars and Hear’Say fame.  There must be something there, right?  Other than a Wigan link through “band”mate Kym Marsh it turns out not, probably not a surprise as I’d got her confused with Hannah from S-Club 7 any way. 

Not that I’d ever claim to be an expert on fabricated naughties pop bands afterall, they’re just puppets for some record company Svengali or other…

Header: R Dean Taylor – Ghost In My House

Not wanting to get involved in any Wigan/Leigh style territorial disputes, the saving factor to Bury’s musical heritage could well be that Mark E Smith is from Prestwich.  Which, if nothing else, is on the way out to Bury from Manchester.  The Fall have got a new record out, “wise ol’ man”, which I haven’t listened to yet.  I’ve also not had my breakfast, so rather than spending time deciding which song from their extensive back catalogue to go for, I’ll just bring things back to the graveyard theme and go with this Northern Soul cover of their 1987 classic “There’s a Ghost In My House”*.

Now where’s that bacon…
