Left Foot, Right Foot, Header #6 – Sunderland v Latics

If I’m honest, this selection was picked as a pre-Sunderland trio, but then my laptop blew up and… well it didn’t happen.  I’ve got back online (sort of) today and reflecting back all three songs still work, albeit in different ways than they would have done on Friday.  So, to save me thinking too hard whilst having to entertain the junior Perms here’s this/last week’s perfect hat-trick.

Left foot – Simon and Garfunkel – Old Friends/Bookends

One to calm the nerves, it would have been ahead of a visit to meet the old crew up in the North East.  Bruce & co, Cattermole and Bramble, who of course (intentionally or otherwise) had spent most of the week distracting Charlie boy with talk of moving to the black cats come summer.

But, of course, the Sunderland fans are old friends too, this reminded me of  2005 and the “night that they took over Wigan” nearly ruining our promotion push in the bargain.  Is it too much to hope that the ‘nearly’ applies again this season?  If they have ruined our survival push then the two games might serve as neat “Bookends” (sorry) to our time in the Premier League.

Right foot – Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers – Free Fallin’

On Friday, this was supposed to be evocative of Sunderland’s predicament at the time.  Yeah, it was probably me being flushed full of post-Blackpool optimism and getting ahead of myself, but one point out of 27 can’t be described as anything else, right?

I suppose that made the end result inevitable, throwing that sinking feeling back onto Latics.  But that’s all it is, a feeling, things are still as tight as they were last week and although there’s one game less to play there are still five teams in it.  A win would have put things firmly in our own hands, but there’s still plenty to fight for.

Which gives us the finishing track, on Friday it was a rallying call to go and get the three points which would have made things look so much better, today it’s a message for the fans.  Don’t give up, crack open a keg, have fun and…
