Wigan Athletic have confirmed that England Under 20 goalkeeper Lee Nicholls has extended his contract at the club until the Summer of 2014.
Liverpool-born Nicholls arrived at the club as a 16 year-old in 2009 and has continued to show immense promise for the Development Squad. He caught the eye of England Under 20’s coach Brian Eastick, who selected him for his squad at the Under 20’s World Cup in Colombia last summer, alongside his Latics team mate Callum McManaman.
Latics manager Roberto Martinez is delighted to have tied Nicholls down with a new deal and said:
“Lee has made good progress over the last two seasons, but we do think that now he is ready to take the next step in fulfilling his enormous potential. He has worked on the technicality of his position, and now is a great time for him to develop the maturity and the standards required for a professional goalkeeper at the highest level.
“We’re all excited at Wigan Athletic to see Lee taking the final step in his development.”
Nicholls himself said,
“I’ve learned so much whilst I have been here under goalkeeper coach Iniaki Bergara but also training every day with Chris Kirkland, Mike Pollitt and Ali Al Habsi has been an incredible experience for me. I just want to learn and improve and hopefully start fighting for my place in the team sooner rather than later.”
