CRYSTAL PALACE 2 -1 WIGAN ATHLETIC

Wigan Athletic slipped out of the Carling Cup last night at the hands of Crystal Palace who deservedly won the game accoring to match reports.

I personally didn’t attend the game and I’m glad that I did not make the effort, unlike a hardy hundred or so Latics die hards.  It wiould be easy to deride Roberto Martinez, his team and his tactics, but the truth is Latics will be glad to have been knocked out of this competition, given the fact the ‘reward’ is a vist from Middlesbrough at a time when the team will need to focus all their attentions on the Premier League.  The truth is, Latics probably only arrived at Selhurst Park under duress of having to play in the competition in the first place!

Martinez’s team line up bore out this fact.  The only regulars from Latics Premier League team were Ali Al-Habsi and Maynor Figueroa.  The rest of the team consisted of fringe players and also gave the manager the chance to run the rule over his new signings.  This starting eleven will never play together again this season in the top flight and perhaps it is just as well!

That said, the team should have been capable of at least giving Palace a game, and don’t forget that the Eagles were also missing a few regulars.  It would be churlish not to credit them on what was a good performance and I wish them further success in the competition.
