It’s amazing what sort of images stick in the mind and I’ll go to my grave puzzled as to why one of my abiding memories of being a young Laticsmon is the sight of Peter Houghton playing (what seemed like) a whole season with a muddy patch on the back of his shorts.  It’s strange for any number of reasons, not least because it might only have been for a couple of game, but also because I’m not convinced I can remember whether the shorts belonged to the 78-82 blue stripes kit or the 82-83 pin stripe effort.

It’s even stranger because I’ll happily tell anyone that will listen that Houghton was my boyhood Latics hero and, in my head, I’ve always measured that likes of Lowe, Liddell and now Maloney against the bloke we picked up from South Liverpool in the closing months of our non-league tenure and went on to be our top league goal scorer for many years to come.  It would only be natural for your first thoughts on Peter to turn to his 62 league goals, the first league goal at Springfield Park or his hat-trick in the 5-3 come back against Port Vale, but that would be too easy for my little brain, I’ll stick with the dirty shorts, it’s more visual.

Which sort of brings me to the point of this little ramble.  Just as our memories are dominated by what we see, we like to be surrounded by images that remind us of those good times and Thomas Regan over at Milkyone Creative  has come up with a brilliant visual reminder of Houghton’s time at Springfield Park with this Peter Houghton print.

Thomas’ football legend prints have a lovely retro feel and this one features a true Latics legend at the height of his powers and his signed by the man himself (see photo below). Available in a limited run at 30cm x 40cm using quality 300gsm card stock, and with Christmas (and your favourite webmaster’s birthday) just around the corner ten of your English pounds looks a complete steal. Get them on your list for Santa or simply just treat yourself before they are gone.

You can pick up one of the prints over at the Milkyone Creative website by clicking on the image above, or the link below. If you’re a supporter of another football team that’s stumbled across this article by accident, or a Latics fan who likes a non-tic enough to buy them a present, have a browse about there are quite a few treats for anyone who has got some wall space and an understanding partner.

We have 2 signed prints to give away just answer the following question:

Who scored Latics’ first ever league goal only for it to be disallowed?

Send us your answer by email to siteadmin@thisnorthernsoul.co.uk by 5:00 on 30th October, we will draw the winner at random from the correct entries.

As always,

Have fun
