Swede as…

The first three signings of the summer haven’t really marked Chris Hutchings out as his own man.  Any one of Bramble, Sibierski or Melchiot could just as easily have been picked up under Paul Jewell, in fact they were probably identified as targets before if announced his decision to resign and at least one of them was the subject of a bid during the old regime.  Despite having spent five months at the club already, the fourth signing is different.

Even though his loan signing was announced with a bit of a fanfare, what with him being a hotly tipped prospect and all, it soon became apparent that Paul Jewell didn’t really rate Andreas Granqvist.  With his team crying out for pace and energy at the back, the strong, quick defender was repeatedly overlooked, much to the confusion of fans.  We had another Johansson on our hands and were left wondering whether Jewell had wanted to sign him in the first place.

One thing seemed certain, we wouldn’t be taking up the option to buy come the end of the season.  Fast forward a bit and the boot is on the other foot a little bit.  Instead of the player wondering whether the club will want him or not, the new manager was fretting that his predecessor’s approach would mean that the lad isn’t interested anymore.  From Chris Hutchings’ perspective it’s a good job he is.

So here it is, Chris Hutchings first signing all to himself, an U21 international and allegedly had been the subject of interest from Liverpool and other clubs before he joined us on loan.  In his one appearance last year, he looked a reasonable player, if a little under prepared.  With a full pre-season to go at he should be knocking on the door of the first team pretty quickly.
Less of a ‘how do?’ for this one and not even so much of a ‘welcome back’ but we’re glad to see you sticking around Andy, we hope you enjoy the ride.
