Wigan Athletic vs Nottingham Forest – Match Preview

Author: No Comments Share:

Well it’s Monday morning, and we are all here in the TNS offices, the reason we are all here, so early on a Monday morning, will probably be made apparent as this day progresses.

Not too sure if you live ‘under a rock’ in Wigan, but there are many many rumours that Wigan Athletic will be announcing some changes today.  What they are, we can only speculate?  Time will tell, whether Jonathan Jackson has to hold a press conference with an empty chair, we’ll see?

Anyway as we’ve said we are all poised at our TNS desks here in Wigan, waiting for the news.

So to the match, it’s the 10th match of the season in the Sky Bet Championship, this match will be played at the DW Stadium on Tuesday evening, the 30th September, with a kick off of 7:45pm.

Wigan for this match find themselves in a lowly 18th place with 8 points & are 3 points above the dreaded Relegation zone.  Nottingham Forest on the other hand have a well deserved ‘Nose Bleed’ 2nd place on 19 points.  They ironically lost the top spot over the weekend to Norwich with a draw to Brighton; Wigan of course got dumped 2-0 on the South Coast to AFC Bournemouth.

Previous matches, saw both teams play in the Championship last season, with Wigan winning both games, 2-1 at the DW stadium in August of last year, Maloney & Gomez getting the goals.  Then an emphatic 4-1 win at the City Ground in March earlier this year, with a host of goal scorers in Waghorn, Boyce, McArthur & Gomez again (he does pop up again & again).

Overall there have only been a few games with Forest, what with them winning that European Cup in the 70’s!  Yes, when they were winning ‘Big Ears’, Wigan were just tentatively making their way in Division 4.  So head to head, Wigan have won 3, Forest have won just the once and there have been 3 draws in this respective fixture.  Thanks to Cockney Latic, for the head to head info.

The officials for what could be the ‘Butchering at the DW’ and I don’t mean than referee’s performance!  Sees Kevin Wright as the man in charge, he has Nicholas Gibbons and Ken Haycock as runners down the side of the field and the Fourth Official is Barry Croppman.

Looking at the ref stats, looks like the last time Kevin ran a Forest game was a couple of season ago, when Nottingham Forest beat Millwall away 1-0 in the Championship in April 2013, dishing out 3 yellow cards.

The last time Kevin officiated a match for Wigan was a long time ago, it was back in October 2004, Wigan were playing Rotherham in the then JJB stadium, Wigan running out 2-0 winners.  Kevin that day again dished out 3 yellows.

Team news for the match is that Stuart Pearce didn’t pick up any major issues from this weekend’s match against Brighton.

Wigan on the other hand are hoping that man called Ben Watson may be able to come off the bench to start his first game in ages.

As for the other Wigan players, at least we as fans won’t have to worry about SULKY players throwing a tantrum on the coach & refusing to get off; you bloody know who you are!  Just remember when your on the coach travelling down the M6 to Wolverhampton, that empty seat next to you, there will be a reason.

I do hope Wigan do something positive for this match, be it for whoever is in charge, but remember you play for Wigan, and there is no ‘I’ in Team.
