Chesterfield vs Wigan – Match Preview

Author: No Comments Share:
So as we’ve seen a few firsts with some of Wigan’s games this season in League 1, I have another one for you!
As Wigan play Chesterfield this weekend, it’ll be the first time that Wigan have played League Football when England are also playing at the same time!
In fact it’s 12 years and 5 months since England beat Turkey 2-0 in a Euro 2004 qualifier & that Friday night Wigan beat Northampton Town 2-0 with goals from wait for it as these names just roll off my keyboard, Nathan Ellington & Andy Liddell.
That Friday evening Wigan went on to 89 points & Paul Jewell’s men needed just 4 more points for promotion to the then League Division 1 (2nd Tier).  To also help you reminisce, Andy that season scored 16 goals, Nathan 22, that’s 38 goals for 2 strikers, do you remember those days…..
Anyway back to this weekend’s game with Chesterfield, it’s the 6th Match Day in League 1, Wigan come in to this match off the back of a 1-0 win against Crewe, they are in 11th with 7 points, 2 wins and a draw.   Chesterfield are in 7th, with 10 points, their last victory a 2-0 win at Millwall, Jay O’Shea getting both goals. Also like Wigan they were knocked out of the League Cup in August by Carlisle, but have 3 wins and a draw, their only defeat coming against Sheffield United.
This game should be a good test for Wigan and we’ll wait for the Transfer Window to close to see if Gary is able to add to his squad, before we predict what team he’ll choose come Saturday.  But I do see this game as a good indication on where Wigan will finish in League 1 come May 2016.
As for the Bookies, they see Chesterfield at 11/10, the draw is at 12/5 as are Wigan’s odds of travelling back over the Pennines with 3 points by Saturday evening.  You can get 9/1 for a Wigan 1-0 victory, though 13/2 for a like wise result for Chesterfield.
Anyway a big test, it’ll interesting to see how Gary will line the team up against Dean Saunder’s 11 come Saturday.

So the closing of the Transfer Window saw Gary add 3 more players to his squad for Saturday.  With Defender Andy Kellett coming from Horwich, another defender in Jack Hendry from Partick Thistle & Striker Haris Vuckic from Newcastle.  The loan deal with Watford for Sean Murray (who came on in the 2nd half against Crewe) was also extended through to mid January.
Be interesting to see if Murray will continue on the bench & if any of the 3 new signings join Sean on the Bench or make it straight into the first 11?
Come on Wigan.
Andy
