TNS is saddened to learn of the passing of former striker Chris Thompson over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Chris, who was a former England youth international, was one of a trio of players signed by Ray Mathias from Blackburn Rovers for the start of season 1986/87. The others being John Lowey and David Hamilton.  He made his Latics League debut on 30th August 1986 against Middlesbrough at Springfield Park, in a game that resulted in a 0-2 defeat. He was an important member of the team that reached the quarter finals of the FA Cup that season and he along with Paul Jewell formed a prolific partnership with Bobby Campbell.

He spent two years at Springfield Park and he made 67+7 League appearances for the Blues and scored 12 League goals before joining neighbours Blackpool.

His career also took in spells at Bolton Wanderers, with whom he started his career, Lincoln City, Cardiff City and Walsall.  All at TNS are thinking of Chris’ family and friends at this sad time.
