Honours even at the seaside

A Wigan Athletic development squad traveled to Southport to play what is becoming a traditional curtain raiser to the new season enabling a sizeable traveling support to see the bright hopes for the future in action.

The Wigan side was shorn of some of their bigger names in Mustoe, Redmond et al but showed that the passing ethos Martinez is trying to embed throughout the club is beginning to take hold as fluent passing from back to front kept the Sandgrounders on the back foot for most of the first half with Watson in particular catching the eye on the right wing with some quick passing and pacy attacking play.

Wigan opted to give a first half start to a trailist named by the announcer as “Edu”, a search on the internet revealed a plethora of Edu with the majority being strikers so the jury is out as tio who he was. His play was neat and skilful although it would not be cruel to say he was lacking in match fitness .

For all Wigan’s possession it was the best player on the pitch who scored the first goal and he played for Southport, Michale Bakare wearing a shirt bearing the name Thomas cut in from the left and fired an unstoppable shot low to the left of Wigan keeper Hare and against the run of play Wigan were behind.

This deficit lasted all of thirty seconds when from the kick off the ball was played through to Dawson and a moment of indecision from the home side’s defence allowed the Wigan player to score.

The second half started with several changes for Wigan and this seemed to affect the momentum as the new line up seemed a less competant side compared to the first half.

Both sides had several chances with Bakare once again going close and Wigan’s best replacement Angoy should have done better when he fired wide.

The full time whislte brought an entertaining game to a close with the one all result being the right result for the effort and industry expanded.
