Latics to appeal Conor’s red card

Author: No Comments Share:

Wigan Athletic are to formally ask the FA to rescind the ludicrous red card that Conor Sammon picked up for shielding the ball against Manchester United on Boxing Day.

Match referee Phil Dowd, forty yards from the incident, decided that Conor had fouled Michael Carrick as the United star hit the ground as if pole axed after the slightest of touches from Sammon who was unaware of his presence having had his back to him!

Speaking of the club’s decision to appeal Roberto Martinez said: “Conor Sammon did nothing wrong. You need to accept punishment when you do something wrong but this is a normal phase of play.

“The red card is the wrong call. It would be very difficult to see Conor missing for three games but we’ll have to wait and see.”

Latics hope to find out within the next twelve hours whether or not their appeal has been successful.  Failing that Sammon will miss the games against Stoke City, Sunderland and Swindon Town.
