Left Foot, Right Foot, Header #21 – Ring-a-ding-ding-ding

Author: No Comments Share:

Like King Arthur, rising from the grave to save England in its darkest hour, I’m back.  Here to save your sanity (or annoy the hell out of you) by drawing tenuous links between current affairs at Latics and cornily titled pop music.  “Just in time”, I hear you call, “because when the football has gone bad, what else have we left but for music and dancing and beer?”.  What, that wasn’t you?  Damn those voices in my head.

Stone Roses – Going Down

Let’s get it out of the way.  Eight points from safety, 16 games left to play and somewhere between 20 and 30 points required to get to the usual “safety point” in the championship.  Things aren’t looking good but what you going to do about it?  Sit back and let it all happen in apathy?  Resign yourself to our fate with a shrug?  Get all angry about it and ask for everyone and his wife to get the sack?

Because of everything that fills you with despair or gets your back up about the club at the moment, it’s too easy to forget that there’s eleven men on the pitch wearing our shirt, there’s balls to be kicked, goals to be scored and games to be won.  You might not believe in the manager’s tactics or whatever, but there are ways in which we can still turn this around.

We can only do it together though, through sheer force of will, getting behind the players and by trying to enjoy what we’ve got the best we can.  As Ian Brown says in his finish to the song “(I’ll) live until I die”, so should we.

Les Stress ft Katherine Wood – Don’t Dream It’s Over

Yes, I could have gone with the Crowded House version, but that would have been easy and would have denied me sharing one of my favourite tracks of 90/91 and one that I’ve not heard for about ten years (since I got rid of my turntable).  The sentiment is obvious both for the rest of the season and beyond.  Don’t give up, stick together and, if nothing else, we’ll come out the other side stronger.

Whilst we’re on a 1990 tip, it makes sense to go with it and as I’ve avoided being too lazy, I’ll allow myself a treat.  The rules of lazy music journalism clearly state that every mention of Stone Roses must be balanced with a reference to Happy Mondays, so here it is, in its un remixed form.  Whether it’s the players, manager, board or fans let’s hope that some people connected with the club has one of these moments sometime soon.

Keep on keeping on…
