Talking to ESPN immediately following the sacking of Kenny Dalglish, Whelan was of the opinion that the Anfield club was in turmoil and that a whole new management structure was needed at Anfield. Asked of the possibility of Martinez leaving for the Merseyside outfit he was quoted,
“I hope Roberto is with me for the start of the new season, but in football you can never tell. I do know that he is an honest man, and if he is approached by anyone he will tell me about it.
“If Roberto thought he could go to another club because that club was so big and the challenge so great he couldn’t resist it, then I would step aside and let him, but I wouldn’t think he should go to Liverpool, he would be better off with us.”
Martinez though is currently the bookies favourite, with ex Reds manager Rafa Benitez a close second. However, it is thought that John Henry and the board will not listen to the supporters’ sentimental attachments this time with regards to the top job.
And let’s face it, taking their advice last time cost Fenway Sports one hundred and ten million pounds to win a trophy that nobody cares about until the semi finals. They won’t want to fall for that again!
