Pep talk

Well, we thought it was all over, but it’s not.  Latics are now looking to sign ex-Barcelona player and Spanish international Pep Guardiola.  He’s not contracted to anyone at the moment which means that his signing wouldn’t be affected by the transfer window.  Now I remember him as a class act, but he’s been awfully quiet since he left Spain to play in Italy and even more so since his move to Qatar a couple of years back.  At 34 you might wonder what his motives are in looking for a premiership move, but it would be a very similar signing to Horwich’s signing of Fernando Hierro last season and that served them well.

Man City offered the lad a ‘prove yourself’ six month deal earlier in the summer but his preference was for a longer deal.  The length of contract he’s looking for may become a deciding factor in whether or not he signs.  I can’t see us wanting to offer him more than a year (maybe with another one as an option) if he’s looking for longer then it’s probably a no-go (and rightly so).  The other issue will, obviously, be money.  He will have been paid exceedingly well both at Barca and in the retirement fund boosting Qatar league, I’m not sure he’s a big enough name for Uncle David to dig too deep for.
