Pies 2 Toffees 2

With the ground bathed in glorious sunshine the match started at what can only be described a keen pace, Latics tore in the visitors, reminiscent of the “last ten” games last season.

The North Stand support were stunned by Wigan’s onslaught especially when on the ten minute mark Shaun Maloney jinked his way down to the by-line to chip a cross to the near post were the ever improving Kona headed in to the delirious delight of the Wigan crowd.

However the joy was short-lived as Marouane Fellaini laid the ball off to Steven Pienaar whose shot turned into a looping cross to the far post..

Nikica Jelavic beat Maynor Figueroa to turn in his third goal in two games while Ali Al Habsi looked on, the Latics keeper should have come for the cross but that was his only mistake in the game.

Ali then proceeded to keep Everton at bay and was only beaten again by a late Baines penalty.

Scorer turned provider soon afterwards when the ex- Levante forward raced onto a  Gary Caldwell lofted  pass into space on the right-hand side of the pitch.

Kone accelerated past Heitinga and then waited for his team-mates to catch up before providing the cross that Franco di Santo lifted stylishly into the roof of the net bang infront of the Toffee support.

Johnny Heitinga was having “a mare” against Kone and both Howard & Jagielka were struggling to cover for the Everton centre backs inadequacies.

Fellaini should have been sent-off  for kicking out at a Latics player in the box then moments later he deliberately crashed his elbows into Maynor’s face, the ref was a true friend to Everton showing just a yellow card.

Even Bill Kenwright couldn’t believe just how lucky they were to still have 11 on the pitch, the match itself was end to end with both keepers making quality stops, plus Baines was a tad unlucky as he hit the post in a goalmouth scramble.

1-1 at the break and Moyes showed his tactical nouse in replacing the hapless Hetinga with Sylvain Distin, Latics were seemingly content to soak the wave after wave of Everton attacks and relying on the pace and guile of DiSanto & Kone up front.

Again both teams had good opportunities to score with both keepers again earning their wage, yellow cards abounded with Everton winning by five yellows to two.

Just when it looked like Latics were to hold onto the most precious of three points Mirallas fell under a challenge from Figueroa and old boy Baines crashed the resulting spot kick past the despairing dive of Ali.

Well into the five minutes of injury time Shaun Maloney’s has a deflected shot which only just cleared the bar in a hectic finish to this enthralling game.

From a neutrals point of view, a good derby match, spoiled by at best curious referee judgments and a 2-2 draw was about right on chances created.

It was imperative we didn’t lose and the vast majority of Wigan supporters would have settled for the one point before kick-off, however we came so close to getting all three.
