So the ‘old firm’ are interested in Lee McCulloch?  I’m not sure what to make of it though.  If you look at the lad in isolation, as a striker who doesn’t get many goals or as a right footed left winger who doesn’t create much, then the £3million that they are reportedly ready to spend seems a good deal.  However over the last three seasons the big Scot has become a key part of the team and is nigh on essential in Jewell’s preferred system.

Look at how he plays and it’s hard to see what he adds to the team, but when he’s on the pitch, there’s no doubt that we look more solid.  In my opinion we’re going to need a little more than that to continue to progress.  I’ve said it before, but we need more creativity down the flanks and whilst it applies equally to the right as the left, McCulloch is the first player I’d look to replace in the team.

That however doesn’t mean that he should be sold.  He does offer something to the squad, and there will be times where solidity is more important than creativity.  Jewell’s as much as said that the squad will be getting bigger in January and that’s the right way to go.  The depth of the squad hasn’t been tested yet and it’s better to be safe than sorry.  Bring a left winger in; we need one, but to let any of our players go before the end of the season could end up as football suicide.
