Seconds out, round…

We all love the FA Cup, for obvious reasons, and this year we decided to start from the very beginning and each pick a team and see how far our pick would go. The rules were quite simple, your pick wins and you keep that team, they lose and you inherit the winner and carry on to the next round. One extra rule was if two people played each other. The winner was through and the loser was out.

And so we began at the Extra Preliminary Round back at the beginning of August. Ian picked Shepshed Dynamo, Alan revealed his love of Spandau Ballet and went for Hadleigh United (there was another team called HADLEY but he missed that!), Sean decided upon 1874 Northwich whilst Jimmy went for the exotic sounding Eversley and California. Luke stayed local(ish) with Runcorn Linnets and we all waited for the results to come in (well Ian did anyway).

The good news was we all made it through to the Preliminary Round, except for Jimmy whose side lost and he took on Amesbury Town. Luke and Alan who, To Cut a Long Story Short found his side couldn’t make it Through the Barricades (Next Round) fell at this hurdle though, along with Jimmy (again).

The 1st Qualifying Round was next and Chris joined us at this stage with the wonderfully named Bishops Cleeve. Sadly, they got knocked out but Alan (Hertford Town), Jimmy (AFC Portchester), Luke (Ashton Athletic), Ian and Sean marched on to the next round.

The 2nd Qualifying Round began with Luke, Sean and Chris all going through but it was the end of the road for Ian’s original pick, with Alan and Jimmy also seeing another pick bite the dust.

As the 3rd Qualifying Round began Sean was still going strong with 1874 Northwich but Ian was now supporting Nantwich Town whilst Jimmy had Truro City. Alan had AFC Hornchurch for this round only. Chris and Bideford went their separate ways and it was also the end for Luke and Ashton Athletic.

Sean now moved on to Ossett Town for the 4th Qualifying Round as they dispatched of Northwich, Alan was now Hereford, Luke picked up Chorley and Chris had Haringey Boro but sadly Chris was out of the competition as his side were beaten by Jonny Fairc and his Heybridge Swifts. Ian and Jimmy carried on with their picks from the last round and were safely in the hat/ velvet bag.

The fiercest match up so far happened at this stage of the competition and involved @georgiefulham and @WAFC_TPC in the El Tapasico. Insults were swopped on Twitter and firms from other mobs joining in the vitriol. In the end The Pathetic Casuals of Dartford dispatched of Georgie and Burgess Hill Town with ease.

As we moved on to the 1st Round (proper) the rest of the PAN gang kept the same teams going into this round, except for Sean who once again had a new team to cheer on in Solihull Moors but sadly his side, along with Ian, Jimmy and Luke’s teams are all out of the cup after the weekend’s matches.

The 2nd Round (proper) has thrown up a few more match ups so some big names will be leaving the comp.

These include –

Ian (Stevenage) v @WAFC_TPC (Swindon)

Alan (Hereford) v Luke (Fleetwood)

@JonnyFairc (Exeter) v @hitbyaccident (Forest Green Rovers)

Sean (Wycombe) will play the winners of @MmmDonuts (Billericay) and Nick Seddon (Leatherhead).

Jimmy takes his Charlton Athletic side to AFC Wimbledon.

@EmmaThommo has got the best draw of the lot as her team, AFC Fylde, will play the mighty Tics.

Other notable mentions include John Coyne who has only had two teams. His original pick was Berkhamsted and he has had Slough Town since the 1QR and is still going strong.

So, that is your update. It’s been a long road so far with plenty more miles to go yet.

Ties to be played between 2-4 December 2017.
