Joseph Michael Kendrick is 3 years old and has Non-Ketotic Hyperglycinemia, a rare genetic disorder that affects one in 60,000 new-borns.

The condition is so serious that less than 500 people in the world are living with it. Joseph’s Goal has been set up to raise funds and awareness into NKH.

Barry fills us in more on his light bulb moment …..

“This has been a long time coming

I got the idea for Joseph’s Goal the play on the way home from the cup final.

We were stuck in a traffic jam on the M1 and my mind was racing, I was thinking of all the people who were at the game and those that didn’t make it, then pop, I had a light bulb moment and the basis for the story was in my head.

The story centres around a young lad from Wigan, Joe and his dad, their struggle to get to the cup final against all the odds, no money, no tickets, no transport! Also some of the characters that they meet along the way, including the Latics lucky mascot Joseph Kendrick and his dad Paul.

Anyone who has seen the Cup Final will know that Emmerson Boyce played a role in the story of Joseph Kendrick on that famous day back in May, so obviously he had to play a role in our story, all I had to do was ask him, I was made up when Boycey agreed to take part.

The biggest problem I had was getting the whole concept from my head down on to paper, I chewed the idea over with a few people, the format that it will take was suggested to me as a way around certain logistics by a friend Dave Hayes, I was put into contact with a couple of script writers Chloe Foston and Gareth Ronan, that were willing to get involved free of charge, very important that part, and Runshaw College very kindly allowed us to use their studio to record the play, again free of charge.

The FA have also been very kind in their support allowing us to use their video footage from the semi and the final.

At times it’s been very frustrating, the original deadline has come and gone some way back (January!) but it is now complete and live on youtube for viewing.

Obviously with it being for Joseph’s Goal the idea is to raise some money, so if you enjoy the play, or don’t for that matter, please consider making a donation to the charity, any amount from 50p upwards, this can be done at:”
