Latics to go Greek today

Author: No Comments Share:

Wigan Athletic play another competitive friendly later today against Greek opposition Panionios and commentary will be available via the official website’s web portal

Panionios are a multi sport club who also compete in such disciplines are handball, judo and plate smashing. It is also the home of the panini.

You may have heard of their ‘keeper, former Sunderland custodian Jurgen Macho. Their former players include Marco Gabbiadini, Mark Robins and with a loose connection to Latics, Gareth ‘brother of Neil’ Roberts.

Their fans are passionate and probably chuck flares at each other and scrawl graffiti in that daft Greek writing all over Athenian suburbs.

Clearly what else you need to know about them can be gleaned from on Wikipedia, not that I would ever do such a thing, but anyway, let’s hope for a useful work out and maybe a goal or two for the Tics as they adjust to a life “Without Zog”

Here’s the details. If you’re planning to travel by bike, I’d advise setting off now:

Kössen (late change of venue),

Austria

Wednesday July 27

Kick off 5.00pm local time, 4.00pm UK time

A change of both opposition and venue for Latics in their final game in Austria, which now takes place in the small town of Kössen, west of Salzburg against Greek Side Super League side Panionos.

The squad includes former Sunderland goalkeeper Jürgen Macho, the experienced Austrian international who had a brief trial at Latics at the beginning of the 2009-10 season.

Roberto Martinez will once again try and use as many of his squad as possible, but says it’s also a case of maintaining the momentum after a very good collective performance against Al Ain on Sunday.

“It would be good to finish the Austrian trip on a high, but we are more interested in the performance than the result, and of trying to steer clear of any serious injuries.”
